For those with pesky acne-prone skin, it's never just as easy as hopping into your local Sephora grabbing the first thing you see off the shelf. Nope, we have to be extra careful to make sure we don't irritate our skin (thus causing even more breakouts).
With that being said, it can be tough to find the perfect sunscreen. Complicating things even further is the fact that popular acne-treating ingredients such as Retin-A, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid actually make your skin even more sensitive to the sun... which means wearing sunscreen is essentially mandatory. Board certified dermatologist Dr. Orit Markowitz explains that these ingredients can "thin out the top layer [of the skin]" making them more prone to irritation and sunburn.
According to Dr. Markowitz, "It is a common myth that acne-prone skin types need to wear a lightweight/clear sunscreen formula to minimize acne flare-ups." She mentions that thicker mineral blockers such as zinc oxide tend to be much less pore-clogging than lightweight formulas can be. She also recommends avoiding oxybenzone (which can be irritating for sensitive skin) and says that, when it comes to acne-prone skin, "looking for matte finish, non-oily, fragrance-free formulations is the way to go."
