Beat-the-Heat Summer Hairstyles

Summer-proof your hairstyles when humidity strikes with these expert tricks

Low slung bun
It's good to give your hair the occasional break from heat styling during the summer. This low, textured bun is best achieved with air-dryed or unwashed hair -- plus it will make you look instantly put-together. Here's how to get the look on your own:

Step 1: Skip shampooing so that your natural hair oils will create a sleek and textured finish. If you must wash your hair, add a texturizing balm to your damp hair and let it air dry.
Step 2: Make a center part. Using your fingers as a comb, gather your hair into a low ponytail and secure with an elastic.
Step 3: Twist your ponytail around the elastic to create a loose bun and secure with bobby pins.
Step 4: Pull a few of your ends loose from the bun and finish with a light hold hairspray.

Beachy braid
A side braid is a great style to show off long hair while still keeping your hair off your neck. Whitney Port wears a pretty combo of beach waves gathered into a loose plait. Get the how-tos below:

Step 1: Apply a smoothing cream to your hair and blow dry evenly with a round brush.
Step 2: Make a side part and begin to curl your hair starting at eye-level in 1-inch sections using a medium barrel curling iron. Then brush through to soften.
Step 3: Mist your waves with salt spray like Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Texturizing Sea Spray, $17.95, and scrunch with your hands for a beachy vibe.
Step 4: Create a loose side braid and secure with an elastic. Then gently pull loose some of the front sections of your hair. Spritz a light hold hairspray to finish.

I'm crazy about summer. Nothing beats poolside lounging, watermelon slices, sundresses and endless nights. Unfortunately, my hair does not feel the same way -- even though I love the feeling of sand in my toes, sun on my face (with sunscreen!) and saltwater on my skin, my hair does not appreciate mixing with all of the elements. It stubbornly refuses to be anything besides a big, frizzy, hot mess.

While everything else goes swimmingly in the summer, maintaining cute hair when you're outside sweating isn't so easy. That's why we talked to top celebrity hairstylists for their best ideas on the summer hairstyles that'll get you through all your outdoor escapades.

It is possible to keep hair breezy, natural and ... slightly ... tamed even while the temperature and humidity rises. The key is embracing, not fighting, your summer hair's texture. These hairstyles will stay out of your sweaty (oh, we mean glowing) face and make you feel cooler than ever.

Another secret to maintaining the perfect summer styles is cranking up your hair care. Vince Smith of the eponymously named salon in New York City (he's styled models for shows at New York's Fashion Week) shares some of his conditioning tips:

· Wear SPF protection in your hair before going out in the sun. Try a leave-in spray.
· Apply a leave-in conditioner before going swimming in the pool. It'll help prevent chlorine from absorbing into the hair.
· Use an after-sun hair masque if you've been soaking in the sun for more than an hour. It'll help repair any damage.

Various celebrity hairstylists including Adir Abergel, Jeffrey Martinez, and Kara Silverman, to name a few, walked us through exactly how they gave these celebrities their red-carpet dos and how to do other trendy styles seen on: Kristen Stewart, Kerry Washington, Bar Refaeli, Rosario Dawson, Reese Witherspoon, Rachel McAdams, Gwen Stefani, January Jones, Zoe Saldana and Whitney Port.
