Sometimes, the world of CBD beauty products feels murky. Does it actually do all the things people say it does? Can it get you high? Is it legal? And... what exactly is it?
Worst of all — be it due to cool factor or the aforementioned legality gray area — you might not feel comfortable asking these questions. Luckily, Paula's Choice Skincare Founder Paula Begoun has got you covered with a handy little primer.

Let's get to know CBD — aka cannabidiol — oil. "CBD oil is a mixture of the CBD isolate (pure CBD), plus an oil like olive, hemp, or coconut," says Begoun. And don't worry about any trippiness: "It won't get you high because it doesn't have the mind-altering properties of marijuana's tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content (they are sourced in different ways)."
Another important thing to know? It's not the same as hemp seed oil (or, as it's sometimes confusingly referred, "cannabis sativa seed oil"). The distinction lies in the actual concentration of cannabidiol: According to Begoun, "CBD oil ... is richly concentrated in cannabidiol, whereas hemp seed oil only contains trace amounts of cannabidiol, if any."

CBD oil has been gaining more and more popularity as a natural acne treatment. But does it live up to its reputation? "What's clear from numerous studies is that CBD oil functions as an anti-inflammatory," explains Begoun. She adds, "Because acne is an inflammatory condition, research indicates CBD's soothing properties can help diminish breakouts and reduce redness." And in an exciting recent development, Begoun says that recent findings indicate that CBD may be able to help curb sebum production (so you can potentially kiss those oily T-zones goodbye!).

Another touted benefit of CBD oil is the fact that it's supposed to help with fine lines and wrinkles. According to Begoun, that comes down to the stuff's antioxidant properties: "By counteracting free-radical damage, CBD anti-aging creams may be able to help visibly diminish issues like wrinkles skin dullness, and ruddy skin tone."

Even Begoun is a bit stumped by this one, saying, "The legality of CBD-based cosmetic products in the U.S. and around the world is murky at best and open to differing interpretations because regulations differ from state-to-state and by country." That said, she notes that it's becoming more and more accepted worldwide — which she counts as a good thing, given the aforementioned skin care benefits.
