Have Good Technique
Don't kill good products with poor technique. Simpson says that choosing the right formulas and cleansing with the right technique are important when avoiding skin irritation.
"Avoid scrubbing skin, instead use gentle, massaging circular motions on skin," says Simpson. "When cleansing, lighter pressure is better." If your face is turning red while cleansing, try adjusting the pressure to reduce the amount of circulation on the surface of your skin.
Skin persistently irritated during washing? This could be a sign to switch up your cleanser.
Good ingredients for sensitive skin include madecassoside, centella asiatica (aka tiger grass), aloe and chamomile.

"Washcloths are a great tool to physically break down the layers of sunscreen you've applied throughout the day," says Guanzon. "Just make sure to be gentle and follow up with a hydrating lotion afterwards." We'll repeat: Be gentle! Being too rough will cause irritation, leading to more skin care concerns.
Simpson recommends avoiding washcloths unless they are made of very soft microfiber. "I am obsessed with the Face Halo, $22, which really helps remove SPF, makeup, pollution and build-up from skin," she says. Simpson says that the Face Halo can be used daily when being gentle.

How Not to Irritate Sensitive Skin
It's worth saying again: Never get too aggressive when washing your face. Yes, sunscreen can be stubborn, but being overzealous will only inflame skin, especially if your complexion has a tendency to get irritated.
Simpson says that those with sensitive skin can try using a lightweight, moisturizing facial oil after cleansing and toning to help restore and soothe skin overnight.
Guanzon suggests using an after-sun product, like the Coola Radical Recovery Eco-Cert Organic After Sun Lotion, $32, to help skin replenish and recover. This rich lotion contains soothing aloe and agave to provide skin with nutrients and soothe redness and irritation.
