One Crucial Style Lesson We Learned from the CFDA Awards

Hint: It wasn't how to walk in 6-inch heels (still working on that)

Kerry Washington
Washington's yellow gown is a serious pop of color, but she balances things out by keeping her makeup very natural (no extra color necessary) and her hair pulled back so it doesn't distract from her high neckline.

Ashley Madekwe
When your dress is in a beachy sea foam shade like Madekwe's, why not go for beachy waves? This works perfectly with the vibe of her dress but isn't so messy that it dresses it down. And her no-makeup makeup look is the perfect finish.

Ireland Baldwin
A dress this sexy can quickly look cheap if paired with overdone hair and makeup, but Baldwin keeps the look classy with soft waves and minimal eye makeup. We also like how she doesn't match her lipstick to her dress. The soft peach shade she chose works with the dress but keeps her look easy going.

Hailee Steinfeld
Draping your hair in front of your dress might seem distracting, but in Steinfeld's case it actually draws your eye right to the print. Her orange lipstick is also a nice way to work within the color scheme of your dress without going too matchy-matchy.

As you might expect, at the 2013 CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Awards, it is all about the dresses, the shoes, and the accessories. Celebrities, models, and designers go all out to show support to the Guccis, Pradas and even the smaller guys -- Phillip Lim, Thom Browne, Proenza Schouler.

But exactly how to do hair and makeup that won't outshine your dress? Kind of an art form.

The key for this year: KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Think loose waves, loose buns, and minimal makeup. The result was a group of perfectly polished women with their dresses still at center stage.

This concept isn't just for the CFDA Awards though. You can easily try it whenever you've got a party dress or statement accessory you want to show off (like that sample sale number that cost more than your rent). Follow these examples and you'll see how you can finish your look with hair and makeup that works with your outfit rather than against it. Tips worth trying even if your statement dress is more Ann Taylor than Zac Posen.
