"Romantic-looking hair is all about texture and movement," says Nelson Chan, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Nelson J Salon in Beverly Hills.
To get a romantic style with tons of texture and volume, he recommends curling unwashed hair (this helps the style last longer) using hot rollers or a large curling iron. Use a texturizing spray, like Living Proof Instant Texture Mist, before and after you style your hair. If your hair is fine, backcomb it for extra texture, says Chan. Leave it at that, or push hair back with an embellished headband for a pretty touch.
Replace your curling iron and hairbrush with your fingertips and spray wax to create this romantic look. Chan says that medium and short hair can be difficult to curl (as a recent lob convert, I can attest to this); instead, achieve a romantic look by creating a style that has texture and movement. Style your hair with your fingers for a fuller texture (tousle hair left to right), and use a spray wax in lieu of a firm-hold hairspray, which can make hair stiff.

If You Want: A Glamorous Look
To achieve a glamorous look worthy of the red carpet, Chan recommends curling your hair into mid-size curls and wearing it half up or all the way up (think: "princess hair"). For maximum staying power, try this style on day-old hair.
The key to creating glam curls in mid-length hair: Mist on a heat protectant and a medium-hold hairspray before curling with a small to medium-sized curling iron, says Chan. Brush out curls with a soft-bristled hairbrush and finish off with a shine spray (we like Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine).
"Sophisticated date-night looks will be more straight hair that is slicked back," says Chan. Use a flat iron to smooth flyaways and keep ends perfectly straight. Keep the look polished with defined eyes (think: just a smudge of black liner and lengthening mascara) and bold, groomed brows.
Hot date? You've probably already planned your outfit, down to your killer, confidence-boosting stilettos and your on-trend box clutch. But a date-night ensemble is about so much more than just the clothes you wear. (Read: Don't leave your hair until the last minute). We'd even argue that your hairstyle is more important than whether you don an LBD or leather leggings -- try picturing ratty gym hair with a sleek, skin-baring jumpsuit and you'll see why. Hair sets the mood for your entire ensemble.
