Differin Gel is the only prescription-strength retinoid product that's available over the counter, and it's commonly recommended by dermatologists to those struggling with acne. Both Davis and Dr. Chimento highly recommended picking up a tube.

If you need full-strength acne busting medication and don't want to have to visit your dermatologist, this medication will help you," says Dr. Davis. "The 10 percent is maximum strength and ideal for oily skin, but 5 percent or 2.5 percent strengths are also available and are less potent for more delicate skin." This product should not be combined with retinoids, vitamin C, or AHAs. If you want to use them, alternate every other day or morning/evening.
