Heliocare Dietary Supplement, $26.06
"This supplement isn't a substitute for sunscreen, but a great complement to it," says Melanie Palm, MD, dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, medical director of Art of Skin MD and assistant clinical professor at University of California San Diego. "It's a fern plant extract from the plant Polypodium leucotomos and provides a powerful systemic dose of antioxidants that has been clinically shown to reduce the severity if taken prior to sun exposure." According to Palm, these capsules also provide the equivalent of an SPF of about 46. She recommends it to all of her weekend warriors, skin cancer survivors, melasma patients, outside workers and athletes. "I take it daily and double up during days of sunny vacation or long periods of anticipated sun exposure," she adds.

Dove Soothing Moisture Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, $4.88
If wearing a hat is impossible (or undesirable), Francesca Fusco, MD, NYC dermatologist at Wexler Dermatology, recommends Dove DermaCare Scalp Soothing Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner, which contains zinc pyrithione. One study published in the Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology found that applying zinc pyrithione on skin that's been, or is exposed to UV light can help prevent damage. "Apply it in the morning before heading to the beach on your scalp and hair and slick it back," she says. "When you rinse upon the end of your day, your hair will be nourished."

Colorescience Lip Shine SPF 35, $29
Sejal Shah, MD, dermatologist and RealSelf contributor, urges her patients not to overlook their lips when it comes to sun protection, as they are also susceptible to harmful ultraviolet radiation. For added protection that's hidden behind makeup, she uses this lip shine product, which is infused with zinc oxide to block out harmful rays while providing a light hue and dewy finish. "It contains antioxidants to target free radical damage and peptides and hyaluronic acid to smooth, condition and plump the lips," she says. "If you're already using and reapplying lip gloss throughout the day, it's worth it to use one that also protects your lips." She recommends applying it before sun exposure and reapplying after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating.

Solbari Compact Sun Protective Umbrella UPF 50+, $45
Even when you're not camped out at the beach, you're still equally exposed to the sun's harmful rays so long as you're outside. That's why Michele Green, MD, dermatologist and RealSelf contributor, recommends carrying around portable beach umbrella with an SPF of 50 or more. "This one from Solbari is easy to lug around and provides shade and sun protection while lying on the beach," she says. "It comes in two sizes—23 inches and 21 inches—and has an easy automatic open and close feature."
