Great lighting is key to revealing the most accurate reflection of your face. Click ahead to see the lighting tips from makeup artist Noor Farooq.
No, we're not suggesting you forgo your makeup -- this tip is for your lighting. Natural light is your best friend. In a perfect world, your vanity would sit directly in front of huge bay windows (or, dream a little, French doors overlooking your estate in Provence). This direct, natural light casts an even, true light on your face and creates no shadows. When all else fails, place your vanity as close to a source of natural light as possible.
If you don't have enough natural light, Farooq recommends buying 85-105 watt bulbs with fluorescent lighting. "These mimic natural light," Farooq says. Look for white fluorescent bulbs; lights with a yellow tinge alter the color of your complexion, says Farooq.
Whatever your source of light, position your vanity so that your face is directly in front of the light. Light that hits your face from the side or overhead can cast shadows and ruin makeup depth and placement, says Farooq. She recommends using a shade over your bulb, especially if you're planning on being filmed or photographed, since "too much lighting can throw off the white balance."
The place you beautify yourself should be inspiring, fun, personal, and well...beautiful. Frilly and romantic, or sleek and modern, or vintage and thrifty, whatever your style, you can find ways to customize your vanity with functional accessories that speak to your personal aesthetic.
