Like intriguing new hair colors, braids seem to get a major revamp each year as innovative and exciting new techniques emerge. And this year, DNA braids are the latest trending hairstyle taking over our Instagram and Pinterest feeds. In case you're wondering what DNA braids are, according to celebrity master stylist Marshall Lin, they're fishtail braids with extra sections that give it a breathtaking 3D effect that resembles a DNA strand.

To achieve this braid at home, Lin recommends separating the hair into three sections. Your middle section is the smallest and the stationary strand. To form your braid, take a little piece from the outside of the left section, then cross it over. Next, cross that same section underneath the middle section and then add it to the right. To finish your DNA braid, take a piece from the outside of the right section of hair, bring it over the middle section and then add it to the left. These movements are repeated over and over until you complete your braid.
Hairstylist Rheanne White says DNA braids are suitable for both newbie and master braiders, but you'll definitely need some practice first. She suggests starting with a simple fishtail and by watching YouTube videos for a helpful visual.

Styling products can help control the hair when creating your DNA braid. "Try a little wax or gel and definitely finish with a holding hairspray, like Pai-Shau Sublime Hold Hairspray," Lin says. "This hairspray provides a medium hold, which allows for hair movement and gives necessary humidity protection."
If you have wavy or textured hair, you can create your DNA braid without having to use too much product. White recommends using the Pai-Shau Biphasic Infusion as a baseline treatment for minimal breakage and finishing with hairspray to help complete the look.
