What Every Woman in Her 50s Needs to Know About Her Skin

We've rounded up the essential skin-care rules for every fabulous fifty-something

Rule #5: Break Up Dark Spots
When we were kids, those little brown dots on our faces were known as cute-as-a-button freckles. Now, we call them age spots. Believe it or not, freckles and dark spots are actually the same thing: hyperpigmentation, usually caused by sun exposure. However, women with mature skin may have larger patches of hyperpigmentation than younger women have, due to accumulated photo damage or hormone changes.

To reduce the look of age spots, apply a corrective treatment containing ingredients like kojic acid, hydroquinone, arbutin, licorice root extract and niacinamide. In addition, Alpha hydroxy acids and retinol can help fade spots by turning over dead skin cells to reveal brighter, fresher-looking skin.

Rule #6: Blur Imperfections
Sad truth: Enlarged pores and rosacea are likely to crop up in mature skin. There's no forever fix for either of these issues, but you can temporarily reduce their appearance (phew!).

Blur creams and primers instantly improve the texture of aging skin by filling in pores and fine lines with ingredients like dimethicone. If you have blotchy skin, choose a product with a subtle tint to counteract redness. Bonus: When worn under foundation, blur creams and primers give your makeup more staying power.
