12 Things Stylists Want You to Know About Your Hair This Fall

Dos and don'ts to keep in mind once the temperatures start to dip

Don't Shampoo Daily
"Over-shampooing can be drying for the hair during cooler weather days," says Elly Torres, owner and lead stylist of Salon Ascend. If your hair is not overly oily, she recommends skipping the shampoo step and rinsing the hair with lukewarm water, conditioning and rinsing the conditioner with cool water instead.

Don't Skip Out on Necessary Moisture
Torres says this is especially crucial for textured and curly hair types as the cooler weather brings a different type of dryness than the "fun in the sun" summer days. "This type of dryness from overly cold temperatures (and the ruffling of hats and high collars) can cause excess fly-aways, tangles and frizz," she says. "It is crucial to moisturize on a regular basis through the fall months."

Do Rinse Out Conditioner With Cool Water
"Just like rinsing your skin with cool water helps to close your pores, cool water also helps to lay your cuticle down and seal in your conditioner," Torres says. This allows for the natural luster of hair to shine through.

Don't Brush Your Curls
Torres says you won't want to brush out curls, especially when hair is dry. Instead, she recommends using a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair right after shampooing while conditioner is still on your hair.

Do Use the Right Products for Your Hair Type
Torres says that stylers are key to achieving and maintaining your look. "The right products will also allow your style to bounce back after removing scarfs and hats," she says.
