For those who want a striking yet low maintenance look, shadow roots is a hair color trend for fall that gives you a gorgeous, ombre-like effect. Matrix Artistic Director George Papanikolas says this look is most seen on blondes, as celebs like Ciara and Khloe Kardashian have sported a deeper root with bright blonde highlights.
The trick, he says, is to keep your roots as soft as possible, as you want the blend between the root and highlights to look natural and seamless.
"You don't want to have a hard line like you haven't been the salon," he adds.

The key concept for fair blondes is to remember is that you want to create a shadow root that ultimately looks natural. Creating contrast at your root requires your colorist to keep the color a soft brown. Anything darker than a soft chocolate would look harsh against icy blonde strands, making it look like you skipped a few root touch up appointments.

While deep and warmer tones can pull off a much darker root, you still want to make sure your highlights and your roots naturally fade into each other to avoid an unflattering ombre-like appearance.

Salmon and even sunset-hued Starburst hair color turned heads this summer, but expect bold fashion colors to shift towards rich jewel tones this fall. Colors like sapphire and deep turquoise are expected to take center stage, as they give off an enchanting finish that will totally turn heads. If you're dissuaded by the short shelf life of colorful hair, think of it as an opportunity to play around, suggests Papanikolas.
"Fashion colors have more flexibility since they tend to fade fast, so you are able to shift tones rather frequently," he explains.
