It occurred to me recently that if I were hit by a bus tomorrow, I would regret not eating more cupcakes and spending time with soul-sucking people. More about that cupcake thing later, but the soul-sucking person thing? Fixed it. Life is too short to spend with people who leech the very essence of your soul from your body. Wish them well, say goodbye. The space and silence is refreshing, trust me.

Listen, I'm not saying getting older means eating anything with abandon. You've got to get the veggies in and drink plenty of water, sure. But my grandmother had dessert every day before she died. Sometimes I have ice cream for dinner. I eat the salads, I keep my doctor happy by maintaining a heart-healthy body, but cupcake happens and it happens a lot.

If you have not had your big life adventure yet, set aside a little money every single day ($1 will do it) and by the time your time is your own, you will have a nice sum to have a great adventure. I'm currently saving for motorcycle school so I can buy a Harley. Sail around the world, go rock climbing in Peru, learn to scuba dive: the world is a big place and the older you get the more you desire to see it all, drink it all, eat it all, and live every moment well.

I don't know where the idea that by a "certain age" women are useless, that we go home and wait to die, but don't believe it. So many women over 50 have started businesses, becoming activists, moved to different countries, bought land and claimed the world as their own that it should inspire all of us. Life is not over until the very last breath. Write the book, open the coffee shop, design the dress, fight for the cause: it's never too late to be the woman you're meant to be.

If you've not seen the documentary Advanced Style, get thee to Netflix or iTunes and watch it immediately. The older you get, the more getting dressed becomes an event just for you. Let Iris Apfel lead us all to the joys of much too much, ladies: your closet should be a thing of joy. Get dressed for yourself, now and always.
