"Due to the chemical enzyme amylase, the digestion of the gummy vitamin begins in the mouth, breaking down the gummy before it travels to the stomach," says nutritionist Serena Poon. Once in the stomach, she explains that more digestive enzymes (as well as acidity level) will degrade the gummy further, which does not leave much to be absorbed in the small intestine.

"It's important to note that gummy vitamins are not always vegetarian or vegan," says registered dietitian Jenn Fillenworth, MS, RD. Since most are made with animal gelatin, you'll want to keep in mind that you will probably need to seek out other options that best suit your needs.
