Problem number one: those cracked, flaking things some of us call lips. Inviting? Notsomuch. Cane recommends exfoliating your lips every other day, especially "through the heat of the summer and dry winter months."

Our fave DIY recipe: Make your own lip scrub with a few ingredients from your kitchen. Stir together 1 tsp. olive oil, 2 tsp. sugar, 1 tsp. honey. Gently massage the mixture on your lips for one minute, then remove with a damp towel. We also love gentle, lip-targeted scrubs like Paula's Choice Lip Exfoliant with Microbeads, $6.76.

You know how your boyfriend in high school spent three hours every Sunday waxing his car? Well, this is like that. Only it takes about five seconds, and it benefits something on your face, which you wear, like, all the time.

Say it with us now: Lip treatments. Why? "Lips get chapped easily, especially after a lot of kissing," says Cane. "Even if you plan to wear lipstick, apply a little lip balm underneath. Lipstick can dry your lips out so adding a little moisture underneath will keep them hydrated and soft."

Cane conducted a survey of 50,000 men on the subject of lips and kissing and found that a surprising 25 percent gave bold, dark colors the thumbs down. Why? Dudes don't want to wear your lipstick. "They were intimidated," says Cane. "It makes a mess."
