Retro Hot: Cut and Color Hair Trends for Summer 2024

We're not letting the 90s go just yet

Curly Cuts
"We are seeing a lot of rounder and voluminous curly haircuts. It's giving lioness! The best way to maintain these cuts is to shampoo and condition as normal, focusing on the drier ends of the hair. Let the conditioner sit for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water. This is to close the cuticle and for shine. Pat dry with a microfiber towel or a t-shirt to prevent frizz. Use a leave-in detangler, then style hair with curl-enhancing products such as a moisturizing oil and a curl-defining cream." —April explains, and goes on to translate your hair's language: "Listen to your hair; if it is dry and brittle, it needs moisture. If your hair is unnaturally soft and has a gummy-like feeling, it needs protein. It's hard to pinpoint products because all curls have their own journey. Generally speaking, you need a leave-in product, a mousse + gel, or a mousse + cream, depending on hair texture. Once your curls are 100% dry, you can style as necessary. I like to use the dryer to stretch the roots only and finish with a texturizing spray and a light mist of volume-preserving hairspray."

Buttercream Blonde
Buttercream blonde is multi-dimensional and can be tailored to anyone. Melissa Dwyer, Fekkai colorist, shares her observations on hair color trends for this year: "Last year around this time reddish tones were a big hit with our clients. While people are still feeling nostalgic and keeping those tones around, buttercream blonde has been on the rise this season. To achieve a lighter look, it is best to do two rounds before summer, while someone who only wants buttercream pieces can stretch it with one visit. When it comes to a wash routine, I always suggest to my clients to wash no more than 3 times a week to keep a nice, healthy scalp. I like the Fekkai Super Strength+ Repair Mask, $39.50, paired with a priming mist. Together, they lock in the moisture for reduced hair surface damage, and restore the hair's hydrogen bonds."

Apricot Crush
"This trend is complementary to multiple skin tones. You can easily keep the look soft and subtle, or rich and bold while still falling in the same category — an easy color to fall in love with!" —Melissa shares, continuing with some maintenance tips for this tender color: "Depending on the level of richness, the maintenance is a little different. If you choose the softer hues, you can stretch it out for up to 5-6 weeks, while the richer color might need a little more attention by week 4." In the meantime, extend the color vibrancy by going for a color-preserving shampoo and conditioner.
