Navigating the holidays can be pretty stressful with the constant temptation from seasonal sweets and cocktails. However, staying on a relatively healthy track is possible if you're prepared. To help you survive the sugar and calorie spikes all December long, we spoke to a handful of dietitians about all the things you can eat to ensure that your health goals aren't sabotaged. Read on for some foods and helpful tips they recommend to help you stay on track this season.

"I do my best to eat what I would usually eat during the holidays, but there are more occasional treats thrown in," says registered dietitian Jill Nussinow, MS, RDN. "However, I do what I can to avoid sugar and alcohol during this time, as they tend to depress your immune system."

"Make latkes made from cauliflower, zucchini or spaghetti squash rather than potatoes for Hanukkah," suggests registered dietitian Stacy Goldberg, MPH, RN, BSN. Top them with Greek yogurt rather than sour cream and bake or pan fry them instead of deep frying, she adds.

"During the holidays, I am extra careful to drink lots of water," says Rachel Daniels, MS, RD, senior director of nutrition at Virtual Health Partners. "Most holiday events will include alcohol, so I always go in well-hydrated."

"Most holiday parties will have a bowl of mixed nuts," says registered dietitian Katey Davidson, MScFN, RD. "They are a great option because they are high in healthy fats and are extremely satiating."
