We're firm believers that no holiday makeup look is complete without a gold sparkly eye or silvery metallic lipstick. It's like the shiny bow on top of the present. But that doesn't mean you should cake on so much glitter you look over decorated.
We turned to the runway and the red carpet to track down the prettiest metallic makeup looks anyone can pull off. Whether you want to play it safe with a highlighted cheek or go for a statement-making smoky eye, these holiday makeup ideas will give you a frosty shimmer that rivals the freshly fallen snow.

If you prefer shimmer to glitter, this princess-inspired makeup (from Alice + Olivia's Spring/Summer 2015 show) is perfect for you. Sarah Lucero, Stila's Global Director of Creative Artistry, created the "dreamy, hazy look" by highlighting the face just above the cheek bone and out towards her hairline.
The key is that the "skin has to be flawless and really polished," says Lucero, since the only pop of color here is a peach blush like Gucci Beauty Sheer Blushing Powder in Spring Rose, $49, and a glossy lip like CoverGirl Colorlicious Lip Gloss in Give me Guava, $7.99. She suggests using your finger or an eye shadow brush to lightly apply highlighter like Stila All Over Shimmer Powder in Kitten, $22. To finish the look, blend a white shadow like Rimmel London Scandaleyes Shadow Stick in Whiteness White, $4.49 over the eyelids (you can even use it as a highlighting stick), focusing on the inner corner.
For a full-on frosty effect, perfect and highlight the skin (like in the previous look), then focus on the eyes. Line the inner corner and bottom lash line with a metallic white or silver liner. "A glitter eyeliner or pencil is an easy way to add some sparkle," says Youngblood Makeup Artist Philip Luque.

Use an eyeliner like Anastasia Metallic Luster Liner in Liquid Silver, $18. Then, create an icy smoky eye with shades of pale blue and white (we like Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in Carré Bleu, $60). For even more sparkle, try dabbing Lorac 3D Liquid Lustre in Diamond, $16, over your smoky eye.
Finish off your eyes with black mascara on the top and bottom lashes, and be sure to fill in your brows (try Maybelline Eye Studio Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara, $7.99,) so they don't disappear underneath a blanket of white shimmer. Then, complete the look with a pale pink lipstick like Youngblood Lipstick in Pink Lust, $19.
