When it came to black lipstick choices, I lucked out. My co-worker was testing black lipsticks in office for a piece that would help other curious ladies like myself ease into the edgy trend. Ultimately, I decided on another matte finish, and went with E.L.F. Moisturizing Lipstick in Black Out, due to its rich pigment and non-drying formula. Taking a deep breath, I painted my lips black, prayed I wouldn't come out looking like Marilyn Manson, and held my breath in preparation for what I would see next.
While the black lipstick trend is blowing up the beauty world (much like King Kylie), I must say this look definitely isn't for me. While Jenner and countless beauty bloggers make the color look chic and sophisticated, when I put on the darkest shade there is, I felt like I was walking around with a black eye -- or lips rather. I found myself frequently drinking from my over-sized coffee mug to avoid bringing attention to my lips. Plus, the black color only seemed to make my lips look smaller. This definitely wasn't the way to fake Kylie sized lips.
That's when I had my a-ha moment. If dark colors make lips looks smaller, then light colors were bound to make my lips look bigger. No wonder Kylie's always rocking a nude lip. And lucky for me, nude lip colors are one of my favorite lip trends right now, so I had no problem trading in my black pucker for a more natural-looking kiss face.
To get Jenner's nude lip look, I used Lime Crime Velvetines Liquid Matte Lipstick in Cashmere. Its velvety formula glided with ease over my lips, and dried to a supermatte, budge-proof finish. The lipstick itself was amazing, but did it make me look just as amazing as Kylie?
