6 Ways to Get the Biggest, Baddest Lashes Ever

Ditch the falsies and get big, bold lashes for real with these nourishing serums, mascaras and creams

Move over, power brow; your eyelashes want in on the party. Bold brows can make wispy lashes look downright wimpy (so not a good look for your come-hither stare).

As we age, our lashes get shorter and lighter, which can make our eyes look smaller and more tired, says Los Angeles-based dermatologist to the stars Jessica Wu, M.D. But with everything from mascaras and eyeliners infused with nourishing peptides to overnight lash-growing serums, there's a way for everyone to get long, lush lashes -- and look younger in the process.

Here, the best lash enhancing products to help you get the flutteriest eyelashes on the block.

Makeup With Benefits
You don't have to go straight to the prescription stuff to start seeing results. First, try a mascara with lash-boosting benefits.Look for ones that contain peptides, says Miami-based dermatologist Heather Woolery-Lloyd M.D. These proteins may boost blood flow to the hair follicle, which leads to longer and thicker lashes, says Woolery-Lloyd.

With these picks, you'll get instant results (because, hello, it's mascara) along with long-lasting benefits thanks to the conditioning peptides.

The just-launched Tarte Best in Faux Lash Extending Fibers contains nylon and rice bran wax fibers to give lashes immediate "OMG, are those real?" status. Olive esters condition and protect your soon-to-be extra fluttery lashes -- way better than extensions or falsies.

Revlon Lash Potion Volume + Length Mascara by Grow Luscious contains proteins that strengthen the lashes while also making lashes look immediately fuller and longer.

Chantecaille Faux Cils Longest Lash Mascara pairs one of their best-selling mascara formulas with peptides that stimulate keratin genes, resulting in lashes that are stronger and longer.

To amplify the effects, Dr. Woolery-Lloyd recommends adding a separate lash conditioner at night (See: Overnight Serums).

By Prescription Only
It's not very often that a prescription drug has covetable, make-me-beautiful side effects. But old lady eye drops Lumigan, designed to treat glaucoma, were found to do just that. Enter Latisse: a cosmetic version for inadequate lashes. More than just a lash-lengthener, it also makes lashes fuller and darker. Score!

To reduce the risk of side effects like darkening along the lash line, don't be sloppy with your application. Dr. Wu says to apply the serum at night after removing your makeup and contacts (if you wear them). Wait 15 minutes for your skin to fully dry and then get it as close to your lash line as possible. Look down while it dries to prevent it from migrating up your eyelid.

Another (off-label) tip from Dr. Wu: After you apply it along your lash line, use the rest on your brows. Ta-dah! Say hello to power lashes and brows in four weeks.

Overnight Serums
You can also try a non-prescription serum to boost your lashes into bombshell territory. Not only will these serums make your lashes longer and fuller, they'll also improve the health of your lashes. "We take so much time to take care of the hair on our head with conditioners and oils but we never take the time to condition the hair on our lashes," says Woolery-Lloyd, MD (in fact, a lash conditioner is an essential step in her regimen).

We're giddy about LashFood's Phyto-Medic Natural Lash Enhancer, the first Ecocert certified lash enhancer, which uses natural and organic ingredients like rice and soy proteins to get you the lashes you crave.

Our editors fell in love with Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For Turbo -- it was a winner in our 2014 Beauty Awards. It targets all three phases of hair growth to enhance lash thickness and fullness with a blend of peptides.

Urban Decay Lush Lash System comes with a serum that you apply along your lash line and a lash mask that drenches them in peptides and vitamin E, resulting in fuller, longer and thicker lashes in as little as two weeks.

Like Latisse, you'll want to apply these serums at night to cleansed, dry skin so they don't smudge all over the place.

For Power Lashes and Brows
If you crave fluttery lashes and Lily Collins-esque brows, try one of these serums -- sensitive enough to use near your eyes but potent enough to build up your brows.

Elizabeth Arden Prevage Lash + Brow Serum uses -- you guessed it -- peptides, along with a blend of vitamins A, C and E to fortify lashes and minimize breakage from everyday activities, like rubbing your eyes or not being gentle when you remove your makeup. It's fragrance- and colorant free, making it a smart choice for people with sensitive eyes or who wear contacts.

RapidLash has an ingredient similar to the prostaglandin in Latisse that grows lashes, says Dr. Woolery-Lloyd. It's also packed with biotin, peptides and amino acids to replenish and enhance the lashes you already have.
