"Always try to look for shades that the same undertone as your own skin does," says Melissa Baker, the cosmetics director of education for Merle Norman. Working with your undertones will help ensure that any makeup look will pop, she adds.

You might find yourself needing to switch up your shades with the seasons — and when it comes to foundation in particular, natural light is key: "I recommend using some natural light to look for your perfect shade," says makeup artist Jessica Sanner. "If you can't see your applied shade (once it's on your jaw and neck), then you should be all set."

"Think about adding rich and spicy tones to the eyes during the autumn months," says Sanner. "I'm loving orange shades in particular, as they can be used for color blocking looks or for shocking bright pumpkin orange eyes."
