5 Ways to Update Makeup For a Pixie Cut

How to make up your face so you don't get mistaken for a guy

Celebrities are embracing super-short hair: from Anne Hathaway to Rihanna, many a star has recently rocked a pixie cut (even if only for a day or two).

When Poppy King (left), makeup guru and founder of Lipstick Queen, recently decided to chop her signature retro bob into a pixie, it changed her look completely. "I'm glad you still think I'm a girl!" she joked when I called her to talk about the best makeup for women with pixie cuts.

"I think we'll see more and more pixies -- it's the antithesis of the reality TV look," she said. "You don't have to look like a blowup doll to be sexy." Well, that's a relief.

But to pull off the look -- and avoid looking like a dude -- you do have to change your makeup. And getting the right look can be tricky. After much trial and error, King created a few quick rules to follow when you have very short hair. "It's about being flirty and cheeky," she says. "If it's too glamorous, it just competes." Here's how to achieve a flirtatious and fun pixie-friendly style.

Start with Inspiration Photos
King cites two main inspirations for her pixie: pictures of Charlize Theron at the 2013 Oscars and the 1960 French film "Breathless" starring Jean Seberg. But there are plenty of other celebrity icons to look to: Michelle Williams, Ginnifer Goodwin, Halle Berry -- even Beyoncé had a pixie for a hot second. Choose a star with your hair color and complexion and create a Pinterest board of her best looks.

Matte Skin Is In
We know we're stating the obvious, but when you have less hair, your face -- and skin -- is more exposed. Because of that, complexion is everything. "You need to make sure your skin is evened out and not too shiny. It should be even and matte," says King, who changed her moisturizer from a dewy formula to a mattifying one. We like La Roche Posay Effaclar M Mattifying Moisturizer, $30.95, or a gel like Clean & Clear Morning Burst Hydrating Gel Moisturizer, $6.99. To get even skin without shine, try a mineral powder like bareMinerals Skin Care Pure Transformation Day Treatment, $60 -- it hides pigmentation while protecting your skin with SPF 20.

Minimize Your Eye Makeup
When King first got her pixie cut, she did smudgy 1940s-inspired eye makeup and wore lipstick. "I felt like I had to hyper-feminize my eyes to offset the boyishness of the haircut," she says. "But I realized that you actually need less makeup when you have a pixie." The makeup looks too obvious when you have less hair.

So she gave up the shadow and fast-forwarded a few decades to a '60s-inspired look: "just liner on top with a kick at the end -- and lots of lashes." The key is to use a marker or gel eyeliner to create a clean line. We love Marc Jacobs Magic Marc'er Precision Pen Eyeliner, $30, because it's seriously inky and lasts all day.

Opt for Playful Lip Colors
When it comes to lip color, King says it's all about being playful. Instead of her signature red, she often wears orangey shades. "Brights, neons, happy colors all work," she says. "The pixie is a very happy haircut -- it's more playful than long hair." As for your lipstick's texture, she says anything goes: "sheer, shiny, matte -- whatever you like."

King's latest lipstick launch is the ultra-luxurious Lipstick Queen Velvet Rope Lipstick, $50 -- try Private Party, a hot pink shade. For a punch of color that's lower maintenance -- and puts less of a dent in your wallet -- try CoverGirl Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm in Berry Twist, $6.99 -- a fun, fuchsia tint.
