I Stuck Hundreds of Tiny Needles In My Face for Better Skin

Find out if microneedling is worth it

Microneedling, Week One
By the end of the week, I was pretty stoked to wash my face at the end of each day so I could use my dermaroller. The fact that adding an extra step to my routine made me more likely to do my routine is kind of astounding.

And my skin (while by no means in terrible shape before) was looking good enough that I felt confident heading into the office bare faced.

(However, it is important to note here that if you have acne, you should not be microneedling. Not only will it hurt, it will spread bacteria around your face and make your skin more irritated and inflamed.)

Microneedling, Week Two
Benjamin recommends microneedling five times a week. After the first week, I noticed that a particularly annoying acne scar on my right cheek -- PSA: don't pick your pimples -- had become much less visible, and my skin looked plumper. Plus, I had gotten so fast at microneedling, it took about a minute to roll my entire face. I stuck with my routine of serum, rolling, serum, moisturizer.

And I was diligent about cleaning my dermaroller after each use with hot water and soap, or rubbing alcohol. If you don't clean it properly, you're basically shoving bacteria into your skin.

Another word of caution: You should never, ever use a vitamin C serum after microneedling. "Vitamin C tends to be very active, and I don't think it's a great idea to drive that down deeper," says Benjamin. "It can irritate and cause inflammation. The best serums to use with microneedling are ones with growth factors, stem cells, peptides and hylauronic acid."

Microneedling Plus a Peel
At this point, I was finally feeling confident enough in my microneedling abilities to add a peel into my routine, which Benjamin recommends doing once a week. Look for a peel that has a combination of exfoliating acids (I used Stacked Skin Care TCA Multi Acid Face Peel, $150, which contains a blend of glycolic, lactic, salicylic and phytic acids, along with TCA and retinol.) Apply a peel once a week before you micro-needle, and you'll enjoy greater exfoliation and uptake of nutrients, says Benjamin.

The peel tingled a bit upon application, and while it didn't hurt to microneedle after it dried, it certainly didn't feel pleasant. But I dutifully carried out my microneedling, for the sake of this experiment Afterward, I patted on a hydrating serum and Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Face Cream, $40, a superhydrating moisturizer.

When I woke up the next morning, I was shocked. Not to brag, but I was the epitome of #WokeUpLikeThis dewy skin. I was so glowy, in fact, I felt compelled to take a selfie first thing in the morning (and I'm not usually one for selfies, unless my makeup is bangin').

Is Microneedling Worth It?
You skin turns over approximately every four weeks (depending on your age), so you can expect to see results about that fast. And results I did see. The pesky acne scar on the right side of my face is nearly gone, and each morning I wake up glowing. And it's improved not only the look of my skin, but my skin care routine -- something I'll be grateful for when I'm older.

And once you get the hang of it, microneedling adds less than a minute to your skin care routine. So is it worth it? To quote Napoleon Dynamite, "Heck yes!"
