New Beauty Buzzwords: Punk, Vamp, Shimmer

Our favorite pros weigh in on the hottest makeup trends for Fall 2013

Rebel Liner
Smoky eyes are usually associated with "sexy" makeup, but this fall's smudged eyeliner and shadow isn't about bedroom eyes. Think: surly punch in the eye. "Punk is back this fall, but has evolved into a grungier take on the look with heavily lined lids, messily smudged a little for that 'I don't really care' feel," says Amy Nadine, celebrity makeup artist with CoverGirl. The MAC Cosmetics makeup team says: "Liner and shadow have dropped any sense of sexy smokiness and picked up a rebellious streak that is unconventional, anti-glamour, and attitude-driven."

To get the look, Nadine suggests lining your top and bottom lashlines with black liner, then smearing the line with your finger for that "post-night-out" look. (OK, so maybe it is still a little sexy.)

Red Alert
Red lips for fall -- not original but definitely stunning. And this year the trend is to pair red lips with a pale complexion, says the MAC team. So, put away your bronzer.

The texture of this season's red lip is also a little different. Joanna Schlip, celebrity makeup artist with Physicians Formula, describes it as "like a liquid lipstick" -- not totally matte but not overly glossy either. If you want to go for a professional spin on it, Nadine says to try "a vibrant cherry red center, wine-colored corners [use lipliner], and top with clear gloss to bring it to life."

Ethereal Glow
Skin goes "Twilight" this fall, with lots of dimension and texture. The MAC team describes the look as "focusing on the way skin picks up light: chalky matte, balmily waxen, or with a dewy glow -- and often within [one] face." Put another way, skin that has an airbrushed, "I'm in amazing lighting at all times" appearance.

But if you don't come by that sort of complexion naturally, you can still fake it. Jamie Kern Lima, founder of IT Cosmetics, suggests starting with a CC cream to even your skin tone and give your complexion a glow. She also says to lay off the bronzer, since a paler look is in for fall. Schlip says you can still contour without bronzer, just try a gold shimmer powder as a "reverse contour," she says. "Place on top of the cheekbone, down the bridge of the nose in the center, and above the eyebrow bone to enhance facial structure."

Natural Shimmer
To go with your pale glow, eyes are natural, shimmery and dewy this fall. This is great to wear on it's own, or if you're also trying out a bold lip look, says the Maybelline Fashion Week makeup team.

The first step, says Lima, is to illuminate your eye area, which "instantly allows you to look refreshed and youthful." She suggests applying a luminizing cream around your eyes for a glow, and then you can leave it at that for a simple look, or follow up with a metallic shadow to draw even more attention to your eyes. Try shades of gold, gray, or even pink.

Colorful Cat Eye
Not into punk? It's not the only bold eye trend this season. "Winged shadow is big this fall, marrying the cat eye with the smoky eye and varying it in different washes of color," says Nadine.

You can go the traditional smoky eye route with a black, bronze, or purple shade, but Jenna Menard, Clinique Global Colour Artist, has another idea. "Blue hues were all over the runways for fall and are one of my favorite picks for eyes," she says. She suggests going all out with an intense blue shade or, if you're still warming up to the trend, a softer baby blue.

Another fun shade, albeit trickier to wear, is pink. "Pink hues paired with deep browns work well together to create a subtle smoky eye," Menard says. Just be sure not to pick a shade with too much red -- it can make your eyes look tired.

Sure, summer is just getting into full swing, but we're already hearing whispers about the new makeup trends for Fall 2013. It's bold (brows), it's bright (skin), it's retro (dig out those Doc Martens), and it's what we'll be wearing come September when things start cooling off.

But don't take our word for it. We went straight to the experts -- the makeup artists we trust most. These pros combed Fashion Week runways in New York, Milan, London, and Paris and spotted (or created) the headline-grabbing makeup trends you'll be seeing everywhere this fall.

Some of the trends, like red lipstick, are classic fall staples. It's like the harbinger of cool weather -- we expect it, and fall in love with it year after year. But some of these news looks, like the colorful, winged eye makeup or hyper-contoured, glowing skin, are a complete 180 from recent makeup trends. To be honest, they seem a bit intimidating at first look, but all of these trends are easy to wear and work on everyone -- Scout's honor. Even better, a couple of the fall makeup trends, like rebel/punk eyeliner, are supposed to look messy. Even if you think you're completely inept at applying makeup, you almost can't screw up this look.
