Add formaldehyde resin and camphor to the list of off-limit substances in five-free polishes. Many nail products that used to be three-free upgraded their status to exclude these two ingredients, both of which are allergens for some people. The Environmental Working Group's cosmetic database lists them between a moderate and low health risk, though, so upgrading is completely optional.

When five-free just isn't enough, that's where the seven-free polishes step up to the plate. Ethyl tosylamide, an ingredient banned in Europe, and xylene, a chemical that can cause all kinds of organ toxicity when used in large quantities, are given the heave-ho in seven-free polishes. But here's where it gets tricky: Most conventional polishes don't contain xylene anymore, whether they tout it or not.
