The Spring Runways Want You to Trade Your Liquid Eyeliner for Pencil

It's time to rediscover the versatility of eye pencils

Keep it classic
There's nothing wrong with sticking with a classic look. The JW Anderson Spring 2018 show demonstrated how pretty a swoosh of black pencil eyeliner across the bottom eye can be, especially when paired with radiant skin and groomed brows.

Soften up
No pencil sharpener? No problem. To recreate the look at the Lutz Huelle Spring 2018 runway, it's better if the eyeliner is on the duller side because it makes it easier to achieve a thick line. Beginning at the inner corner on the lower lash line, draw a stroke to the outer corner. The key to the wide-awake look is to line just under the waterline.

On the waterline
Look closely and you'll see that there is just the faintest hint of black eye pencil on the waterline. It's the softest touch but it does make a difference. Choose a waterproof pencil, like L'Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof Pencil Eyeliner, $8.99, because it's smudge resistant, waterproof and suitable for use on the waterline.

Black and white eyes
The bold black and white eyeshadow is no doubt the focal point of this look but the eye pencil on the bottom lash line is what creates extra dimension. Take a cue from the runway and apply a thick line along the central part of the eye.

Quick flick
It's not always necessary to line the entire eye — just a literal dash on the outer corner can have a lifting effect. Make sure that the eye pencil is sharp for a crisp finish.
