All cat eyes do not require liquid liner. Try a new approach by using a black pencil eyeliner on the upper lash line, extending the stroke out to form a wing. Instead of a sharp finish, use a chocolate brown eyeshadow to smudge the line. It looks romantic and saves you from having to draw the ticks at identical angles.

A basic cat eye flick this is not. Rather than sticking with one shape, play around with flicks, chevrons and ticks. This look would still be striking with black eye pencil, but a shot of red liner, like the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, $20, adds extra dimension. Be bold.

Eyeliner pencils are the perfect product to use when experimenting with color because it's hard to overdo them. Take a cue from the Tadashi Shoji Spring 2018 runway show and mix a shimmering pale green eyeshadow with vivid blue eyeliner. The Sephora Collection Contour Eye Pencil 12hr Wear Waterproof, $10, will create the same saturated effect.

One of the benefits of eye pencils is that they can be layered with ease. Models at the Carolina Herrera Spring 2018 show were given special treatment with a thick white eye pencil applied to the bottom lashes before a thinner stroke of black. The bit of white acts as a soft highlighter, making eyes look bigger.
