You probably already know that retinol is one of the best anti-aging ingredients in your skin care arsenal.

"Retinol increases collagen production, helping to plump up the skin," says New York City dermatologist Julie Russak, MD, FAAS. "It also speeds cell turn over, smoothing out your complexion and essentially renewing your skin cells daily."

Despite all its wrinkle-fighting power, many people are hesitant to use retinol around their eyes — and for good reason: It can be very irritating and cause redness and peeling. Imagine putting that on the most sensitive skin on your body? It may seem scary, but you can use retinol around your eyes — it's all about finding the right retinol eye cream.

"There are different derivatives of retinol at lower concentrations that are used within eye creams that are safe to use," explains Russak. "These formulations commonly load up on antioxidants and calming ingredients to ensure no irritation."

If you're still concerned about your sensitive peepers, Russak suggests using a retinol eye cream only two to three times a week at first. You can build up to using it daily. And remember to apply an SPF of at least 30 every day — no excuses. Your skin will be extra sun sensitive and prone to burning.
