Though it may be tempting, don't choose your sheet mask by packaging alone (no matter how cute it is): Not all sheet masks are the same.. They have different uses and benefits which may or may not be effective for all skin types. So, take your skin into consideration before buying sheet masks — it's always better if you do a little research first.

Sheet masking doesn't replace washing your face — you always need to use a cleanser first. The layer of dirt and dead skin on your face make it difficult for your sheet mask to do its magic. So, prep your skin by washing your face with your favorite cleanser — and if you really want to reap those masking benefits, consider exfoliating first too.

Um, "backing paper?" Yes, some sheet mask have a thin layer of paper over them as part of the packaging. You have to peel them off before putting the mask on your face because a) it's not meant to go on your skin and b) it prevents the serum from fully transferring to your skin.
It's a funny mistake but it's not uncommon — especially since some masks have backing paper on both sides. So be sure to double check the sheet mask you're using!

If applied incorrectly, some areas on your face may not get coverage, or your mask might fall off easily. For best results, gently press the mask on your skin and pay attention to the contours of your face. Align the holes to your eyes, nose, and mouth respectively. Make sure it adheres to the larger areas of your face like your cheeks and forehead by smoothing it out.
Pro tip: if you're running out of time, gently rub the mask on your face to speed up the process.

Enjoying the mask too much? Leaving it on for a longer period doesn't necessarily yield better results. (They don't just put the 20-minute mark in the instructions for fun.)
Your sheet mask will dry out soon after the recommended duration, which can actually strip moisture and nourishment away from your complexion. So always follow the instructions (okay, maybe exceeding just a FEW more minutes is alright). If you really want to keep it on longer, you might want to try an overnight sleeping pack instead.
