9 Sneaky Ingredients to Watch Out for in Skin Care Products

Could one of these be the mean culprit in your skin care regimen?

Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is another very common ingredient found in skin care, and generally speaking it's considered safe. However, Dr. Murphy-Rose warns that it is often associated with contact dermatitis. "Further," she adds, "Propylene glycol enhances the penetration of other ingredients into the skin which can make susceptible users more at risk of reactions to those other ingredients. It's a good idea to avoid this ingredient, especially in patients with sensitive skin."

Artificial / Synthetic Dyes

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Dr. Murphy-Rose says that "many artificial or synthetic dyes that may be found in makeup like mascara are thought to be carcinogenic and toxic." She says it's best to avoid ingredients starting with FD&C or D&C with a color and number.

"Some of these contain heavy metals and are known to be carcinogenic and associated with lymphomas and multiple myeloma. Coal tar dyes can cause severe allergies and trigger asthma attacks, headaches, nausea, and other systemic effects. They have been prohibited in cosmetics in Canada," she says.

Instead, reach for cosmetics that utilize natural dyes. More are being discovered and utilized in beauty products every day! For example, Ere Perez Beetroot Cheek & Lip Tint, $26, uses beetroot to get that gorgeous color.
