Here's Exactly How to Apply Your Skin Care Products in the Right Order

We take out the guesswork so you can put your best face forward

Get primed to catch ZZZs with this p.m. skin care routine
Christopher says to think of your nighttime skin care routine as a "health ritual for your skin" and a way to physically and energetically "remove the day" (i.e. oil, sweat and makeup) from your skin. Now is the time to apply your heavier, more concentrated products in preparation for them to be absorbed while you sleep.

Step 1: Cleanse to remove the day
We want to start by cleansing the face in a similar manner to the morning. Apply your cleanser for at least one minute to break down your makeup and any other pore-clogging grime. If you have an exfoliating cleanser, Christopher suggests nighttime is the best time to use it.

He also recommends adding a mask treatment following the cleansing step once or twice a week. "If you're looking to clean out your pores and brighten your skin, then I suggest an exfoliating mask that uses clay — let it dry and then rub it off with a wet cloth."

Step 2: Use an exfoliating toner
Like you did in the morning skin care routine, apply your toner to a cotton swab and smooth over the face to remove any additional product and prep the skin for better absorption of the active ingredients in the next skin care steps.

Step 3: Apply your serums
According to Christopher, this is also a good time to choose serums with more actives like vitamin A (i.e., retinols) that have a deeper effect on your skin while you sleep. These can make you especially photo-sensitive, so they're best for bedtime. Let them work their magic while you catch your beauty sleep.

Step 4: Select a hydrating night cream
This is the time when your skin works to repair itself from the daily life activities. It's best to choose a more hydrating formula that can fully absorb as you sleep and, as Christopher puts it, "No need to worry about looking a little shiny in bed." Your skin will thank you for it later.
