"A layered shag is a perfect cut to compliment a diamond face shape this spring," says Ounanian. Keeping your perimeter longer and your layers starting at the top of the cheekbone will draw attention away from your jawline, she adds.

"The best cut for rectangular face shapes is one that adds a little width to the sides to help round out and soften the edges," says Gareth Palmer, senior creative design ambassador for Keune Haircosmetics, and stylist at Salontology, Raleigh, North Carolina. Ask your stylist for layers to create width and break up the long, narrow line, he suggests. Or, if you love a longer silhouette, he also advises asking for a heavy fringe extending to the corners of your eyes to accentuate the lines and shape.

"Ask your stylist to soften the corners and create roundness at the points to soften the top of the shape and the jawline," Palmer tells TotalBeauty.

"Ask your stylist to cut a lot of layers to give the illusion of lift and width and create balance," suggests Palmer. He also adds that a soft fringe creates the perfect finish and emphasizes your eyes.

"Framing around the face or bangs will complement a longer face shape," says Nunzio Saviano, owner of Nunzio Saviano Salon in New York City. It can be any type of bang, he explains — though longer, wispy bangs are a great way to dress up hair when you have a ponytail or updo in the summer.
