The pandemic has changed every aspect of our lives. Face masks have forced us to reevaluate our beauty routines. We've focused our makeup routine on our eyes and even developed strategies to deal with maskne.
Now that spring is here and summer is right around the corner, you're probably considering tweaking your sunscreen regimen. Masks are still vital. But do we still need to apply sunscreen under our masks? And how do we stop it from being wiped off?
It's important to stay protected so we asked skin care experts for the best sunscreen and mask practices. Here's what they had to say.

Do you still need to wear sunscreen with a mask? The short answer is yes. Skin care experts recommend applying sunscreen every day even while wearing a mask. Besides, there are times you won't have your mask on.
"I would love to say that we all wear our masks 100 percent of the time," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rita Linkner. "But in reality we all take breaks, especially outdoors, and so it's best practice to continue to apply sunscreen on your entire face." Don't forget to apply sunscreen to your neck, lips, back of hands and the top of your ears.
Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marnie B. Nussbaum notes that seasonal activities, like eating outdoors, swimming, running and playing outside, can leave skin more exposed. So she suggests continuing your usual sunscreen regimen.
A good broad spectrum SPF offers extra benefits. Vice President of Product Development at Algenist Tammy Yaiser explains that broad spectrum SPF products protect from UVA rays, which are responsible for photoaging, and UVB rays, which cause sunburns. Dr. Barbara Sturm, founder and CEO of Dr. Barbara Sturm Molecular Cosmetics, recommends her clients wear sunscreen under their masks for several reasons. She points out that cloth masks have a SPF of around seven, "which is well below what skin needs to be fully protected from the sun." Sturm also notes that people tend to wear masks loosely and pull them down in certain cases, which leaves skin completely exposed to damaging UVA rays.

Another reason to continue slathering on SPF? Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Naissan Wesley explains that many modern sunscreens contain antioxidants or ingredients that help protect against (and even reverse) damage created from environmental pollution and sun exposure.
"The best sunscreen is the one you WANT to put on and reapply," says Linkner. "Compliance is key. So if that means you prefer a mineral-based product like Rodan + Fields Soothe Daily Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30, $40, that doesn't rub off as easily on your mask that makes sense to me."
To help prevent dreaded maskne, Wesley suggests a noncomedogenic sunscreen like Arbonne RE9 Advanced Prepwork Soft Focus Veil Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen, $44. "Having some type of topical on, whether it's a sunscreen or a cream or serum, is better than having nothing on the skin under the mask because having that barrier between your skin and the mask helps prevent irritation and maskne."

In addition to being safer, applying sunscreen to your entire face is simply easier, according to Sturm. That way you don't have to worry about missing spots. Masks are prone to shifting, after all. So you even want to protect your lips. Kissers have very thin skin that can be damaged by the sun and are very susceptible to mask friction.
