Fugate says that the type of look you'll end up with depends on the type of hair you have. Gals with natural movement to their hair could simply apply a bit of mousse (if they need volume) or cream (if they don't) and then roughly dry hair with a blow dryer and hands. Shake hair, tousle and go. Girls with curly hair or kinkier textures can embrace their own version of bedhead by setting hair in twists or knots overnight and then tousling the style in the morning.

Finer hair textures can achieve this look by setting wet or dry hair with strips of an old T-shirt or strips of rags. "Cut them into strips and wrap your hair around it a few times like you would a curling iron. Twist the ends tightly around the twisted hair, then tie them in a knot. It speeds your morning styling time because all you do is pull the rags out and it creates this messy texture that's different every day." This '70s-inspired style depends on how big you want to go. If you want to go totally old school, you can try hot rollers which will give you a very retro vibe with tons of bounce. Fugate is a fan of a more modern take using a curling iron. "I think the modern girl will want to set sections of hair with a curling iron or wand to keep the roots flat. The trick is the brushed-out effect; you've got to really beat the hair up with your brush. Think Marsha Brady — take that paddle brush and count to 100 strokes."

Fugate is a fan of dry shampoos like Dove Volume and Fullness Dry Shampoo, $3.99, as a finishing spray to achieve the matte, cotton-candy, '70s look from the runways and says to skip the hairspray. "The more you try to manipulate it, the hair gets sticky. It also makes the hair a little wet, which makes it want to revert to curly-coily."

The key to this updated take on the sexy, undone texture is a good curling wand (Fugate advises a 1"-1 1/2" barrel, like the T3 Whirl Convertible Styling Wand, $185). "You don't want to use a beach waver," he cautions. "You want to wrap and twist the hair around something and the wand is the best tool since most people don't have the patience to do a perfect wave wrap and twist set with rollers." If you want more of a beachy wave, braid hair before bed and sleep in the style. Wake up and unravel your plaits for a wavy hair day. If you have hair that needs a little help with hold, Fugate recommends thickening gels and mousses (Shu Uemura Ample Angora Volumizing Mousse, $37.99, works well) pre-blow dry.

We're talking a very '90s supermodel, Cindy Crawford type of oomph, and Fugate has two words to get the look: velcro rollers. "(They) give you a sexy, big look that falls softer than hot rollers." He also recommends large velcro rollers for gals with more unruly texture who want to try the look without using heat to stretch the hair. "They're great for girls with thick, unruly hair who wish they could tame it just a little bit. You throw that around a few velcro rollers and it looks awesome." For those who need a bit more help with hair height, Fugate recommends using a fine volumizing mist like John Frieda Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow Out Spray, $9.99, used on each section of hair like a setting lotion.
