After having a baby, I wanted to get back in shape. (Shout-out to all the new moms out there -- I know it's not easy.) I decided to try Pilates because it's all about core strength, I can do it at home and it doesn't require much sweating. (Sweating means showering, which is not at the top of the New Mom Priority List.) read more
Even for you earth-friendly folks, composting probably seems a little extreme. I get it: In addition to being a little too "Portlandia" for my taste, composting used to intimidate me. I had a hard time imagining how it would fit into my busy life. read more

Everyone's got her little tricks for mellowing out after a rough day, or just because. I go on evening strolls and enjoy the gorgeous L.A. weather. Or I linger in the kitchen making a big meal with ingredients from my garden. read more

Maybe it's the routine of having a child and seeing all the waste that results from it -- relax, people, I compost those diapers! -- but I've become really conscious of what I use or destroy throughout my day. One of the things I'm very wary of wasting is water. I mean, I care about water conservation so much that I asked people to contribute to purchasing wells for my 30th birthday. So I've come up with a few tricks. read more

Someone recently asked me for the secret to balancing work and family. Man, do I wish I could answer that one! It's a loaded question, and, unfortunately, I don't think there is a secret. read more
I love to make my own body scrubs. Not only is it cost-effective, it also allows me to have complete control over the ingredients. I know they're natural -- and good enough to eat. My go-to brown sugar scrub leaves skin soft (the brown sugar is a gentle exfoliant) and moisturized (thanks to the coconut oil), and it even has anti-bacterial properties (hooray for honey). Here's the recipe: read more

So, unless you haven't picked up a ladymag in the past year, you know that juicing is this big deal right now. I think juicing can be a positive thing to give your body a break and a quick hit of vitamins and minerals, but I believe fruits and veggies have fiber for a reason. Most juices -- even the green ones -- have a ton of antioxidants but don't have enough fiber to balance out the sugar rush. read more

A big part of living a more ecofriendly lifestyle is reevaluating your energy and water consumption, which usually starts with the biggest natural-resource-suck of all: Your home. And anyone who's ever opened her monthly bills and had a WTHeck? moment knows that there's always room for improvement in how much water and electricity you use. read more

A $4 washcloth is my ultimate beauty tool. Yes, I'm serious. If you want to look instantly better without makeup, try this: Soak a washcloth, pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds and lay it on your face for a minute or two. It creates a quick flush, it wakes you up as well as a cup of coffee, and makes your face look as good as wearing foundation. read more
On the weekends, I'm not much of a makeup-wearer. I like to give my skin a break when I'm not on set loaded up with gobs of it and baking under hot lights. Plus, as a new mom, makeup doesn't always find a place in my morning routine. And throwing a wet face cloth in the microwave to warm it up is as close as I have gotten to a facial lately (at least it saves water). Let's face it, if I have to choose between making kale chips and putting on foundation, I'll pick the veggies every time. read more
