I agree with the "good" and "bad" products. One little-known wonder is Pond's "Clarant" moisturizer. It uses Niacinamide--completely healthy for skin--to clear away brown spots. The fragrance is fresh and most pleasant, and the texture is beautifully lightweight. I used it inconsistently under makeup for two weeks (for shame, I know). My brown spots disappeared. Clinique and other products had irritated my skin, but my complexion glows with Ponds.
