Makeup: Try a lip stain
Lipstick -- the brighter the better -- has made a comeback in recent years. But if you're anything like me, you probably have a dozen tubes of colors you love but never wear. Enter: the lip stain. The new formulas are anything but drying, and you don't have to worry about them ending up on your teeth.

My favorite splurge is Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain, $32. It feels exactly like a gloss, but really lasts -- and it comes in amazing colors. A more affordable option, Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain, $8.99, will also last through an entire night out, and is as moisturizing as your favorite lip balm.

Nails: Swap your signature mani
If you're obsessed with nail art, it's probably your calling card: Friends and coworkers notice you for it, and you can't even grab a coffee without the barista commenting on your mani. Which is why, if you're looking for a major change in 2014, it's time do something crazy: Go nude. Nude nails are classic, match everything in your closet, and will make you look polished -- pun intended.

Teeth: Start whitening
Want to immediately look younger, healthier, and prettier? Sure, a new hairstyle and great makeup can help, but it won't make as big of a difference as whitening your teeth. "There's a reason teeth whitening is an important part of any makeover," says New York City dentist Nancy Rosen. "It makes a big difference in your overall appearance."

And there are so many at-home options: Crest 3D White Premium Effects White Strips, $49.99, are faster and gentler than ever before. You only need to wear them for half and hour, and you'll see a difference in three days.

Body: Get a tan (sunless, of course)
There's no rule that says self-tanner is only for summer. If winter is getting you down and your skin tone is bordering on gray, grab your favorite tanner and make people think you were on vacation. Just don't go too far -- the formula that looks natural in August is probably too dark for January. "I recommend using a gradual tanner mixed with a regular tanner," says Cindy Barshop, founder of Completely Bare. Your tan will be noticeable enough to make a difference, but not dark or orange enough to scream "fake."

Fragrance: Complement your personality
While your fragrance may not actually impact your look, it does effect how you're perceived. For example, if you'd like to have a sexier vibe in 2014, go for a sexy fragrance like Gucci Premiere, $63, which is both musky and sweet, or Halle Berry Closer, $28, a sweet floral with vanilla and violet. If your January goals are more work-focused, try a sophisticated scent like Donna Karan Cashmere Mist, $78, which is meant to be empowering.

My biggest problem with New Year's resolutions isn't that you're setting yourself up for failure (even though that's generally the case), it's that executing them can be so expensive. Want to hit the gym? Get ready to shell out hundreds of dollars for a membership. Need a hair transformation? Expect a $200+ salon bill.

Skip ahead to find out how to change your look.

If the goal is to change your look in 2014, there are ways to do it without forking over a small fortune. From tweaking your hairstyle to tossing your foundation, there are quick beauty tricks that can make a much bigger difference than you think. So forget making resolutions -- here's how to change your look for minimal money and even less commitment.
