TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 6*
Why: Readers say this "does moisturize but it doesn't really help the itch." Some say it moisturizes so well that you "might as well use Crisco because that is what it feels like on your skin for a while." Several readers complain that it "smells kind of icky."
TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 5.9*
Why: The bottom line: "it is just OK," readers say. Most "didn't notice any skin firmness" and some say it "had a weird smell." Others say that it "does not leave you feeling moisturized" and that the moisture is "not as long lasting" as they'd like.
TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 5*
Why: Another firming lotion that readers aren't sure "actually does anything to firm." Aside from that, "the texture is not so great, it doesn't go on... smoothly and takes a little bit of rubbing to get it in," one reader says. Another complains that "after a while the smell starts to turn horrid." And one reader has an odd reaction to it: "It stings badly when I put it on freshly shaved legs."
TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 4.4*
Why: While this lives up to part of it's name in that it "provides a subtle tan," readers don't love much else about it. "It never reduced hair growth," readers say. Even using it "consistently for weeks," one reader says it "didn't make any noticeable difference with stubble." One reader adds, "when I rubbed it on my skin it became somewhat flaky. It felt like I needed to bathe."
TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 3.3*
Why: Several readers say "it leaves you feeling VERY greasy" and it "does not absorb into the skin at all." One reader doesn't actually believe the name: "I know shea butter, and this lotion does not have any of shea butter's benefits...The texture is not like shea butter at all...it is very watery. I don't know how much shea butter is actually in this bottle, but it feels like none." The final straw: "it does not smell natural, instead, quite perfume-y."
These days, we expect our body lotions to do a lot more than simply moisturize dry or itchy skin. So many products advertise everything from anti-aging benefits, stubble reduction, firming and more — and TotalBeauty.com readers expect them to deliver on those promises. We think that's only fair, a body lotion — or any other product — shouldn't make promises it can't keep, right?
Sometimes a body lotion will live up to its claims, take the ones on this list for example. But other times, the claim is just that — a claim and nothing more. The body lotions on this list, unfortunately, don't live up to many of their promises.
Check out the list on the following slides to see which body lotions most disappointed TotalBeauty.com readers. Some of the body lotions made false claims, while others had problems with their scents or grease-factor. Whatever the reason, you'll want to steer clear of these lotions the next time you have dry skin, or want to fix another body issue like cellulite or stubble. Because while some of them may offer you some moisture, they're simply not equipped to do much else. Is it time we lowered the bar? Nah, we think it's time body lotions raised their standards of what really works.
