- Posted by Kristen on July 20, 2010 at 01:25PM
Today we're reporting live from Cosmoprof North America, a trade show for beauty manufacturers and distributors, and one that would make any beauty junkie squeal with delight -- we're talking miles of flat irons, nail polish and anti-aging skin care lotions and potions.
Best Summer Health and Beauty Reads
- Posted by Kristen on July 19, 2010 at 01:53PM
Remember in high school and college when there was a "Suggested Summer Reading" list that contained totally non-tedious, uproariously funny and short classics like "The Canterbury Tales" and "The Brothers Karamazov" (please, note sarcasm)? Then, remember when you graduated from the "I-can't-possibly-get-through-this-book-alive" summer reading to numbing your brain with smut paperback crime novels and soppy romance extravaganzas? Yeah, well guess what -- it's time to forget all your summer book "baggage" and move on to reading that's educational AND fun: summer health and beauty reading, of course!
Temporary Body Tattoos ... for Your Bikini Area
- Posted by Kristen on July 15, 2010 at 04:46PM
Wanna, um, jazz up your next bikini wax? Well, the masterminds of Vajazzle (Jennifer Love Hewitt's new fave accessory BTW) created Bikini Ink, a temporary tattoo for ... down there. NYC's Completely Bare Spa will apply an airbrush tattoo post-wax (check out Hair Removal 101 before your next wax) with anything from your significant other's name -- it only lasts five days, in case you're feeling iffy about the relationship -- to a good ol' butterfly.
A Bastille Day Tribute: Celebrity Makeup Icon, Bridget Bardot
- Posted by Kristen on July 14, 2010 at 01:56PM
July 14th is Bastille Day, or La Fête Nationale for natives, and this year marks the 130th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille -- you know, the little incident that started the French Revolution and forever changed the world.
Blown-Out Hairstyles that Don't Suck
- Posted by Kristen on July 14, 2010 at 11:56AM
For me, there's nothing better than having someone wash my hair, massage my scalp and then blow dry and style my hair. Every time I get my hair cut and/or colored, I'm always in awe of a salon blow out (here's how to blow dry your own hair like a pro). But now with the rise of blow out bars (salons that don't cut or color -- just blow) we can all get our salon blow outs on anytime we want.
"Why Fashion Week Hurts My Soul": Baffled by Scary, Bad Hair On Berlin's Runway
- Posted by Kristen on July 12, 2010 at 06:52PM
Fashion Weeks come and Fashion Weeks go and every time I peruse photos from Milan, Berlin, New York or wherever, EVERYTIME, without fail, I have to stop, breath and reassess my "coolness" factor. Below are the pictures that have done it to me this year.
You see, I love fashion, and most of all -- beauty (obviously as I choose to write about it everyday). So I can't help, but feel emotionally invested in makeup trends and hairstyles. And said "emotional investment" provokes me to try, with all my little beauty-obsessed might, to really understand the style culture and embrace all it's bizarro moments. For the most part, I think I get it, or at least I pretend to -- like last Friday night, when I left my comfort zone and rocked black lipstick circa Fall Fashion Week 2008 to a party (see other runway disaster makeup trends here).
Get Cameron Diaz's Day-to-Night "Knight & Day" Makeup Look
- Posted by Kristen on July 9, 2010 at 05:56PM
The jury may still be out on whether Tom Cruise can restore his rep to what it was in his "Top Gun" Days, but all we know is that Cameron Diaz looked stunning at the "Knight & Day" premiere in Rio this week.
The Soda Ban: Good For Healthy Skin, Bad for Your Rights?
- Posted by Kristen on July 8, 2010 at 05:28PM
The Mayor of San Francisco recently banned Coke, Pepsi, and Fanta soft drinks from vending machines within the city's limits -- it's true! And it's causing a ruckus amongst soda-lovers and conservatives alike that don't appreciate the government deciding what they can and can't drink. The ban went into effect this week in order to prevent obesity, but us skin-savvy women of the world are not just weary of the effects sugar can have on our waistlines, but also our skin's health (see if your diet is making your skin look old).
Natural Beauty Contests for Everyone from Drug Smugglers to Nuns -- Yup, They Actually Exist
- Posted by Kristen on July 7, 2010 at 05:13PM
Even though it's certainly not a requirement for beauty editors to be good looking, interestingly enough, one of our editors is the former Miss New Mexico. But don't worry, not all of us are beauty queens -- we need each and every beauty trick we write about. (See the four-minute makeup looks our editors put to the test here -- maybe you can guess which one is the former beauty queen.) Aside from the traditional beauty pageants such as Miss America and Miss USA, we found really random ones too.
The Best Sunscreens For Facial Skin Care
- Posted by Kristen on July 18, 2010 at 05:17PM
The sun's favorite season is officially here. And while most of us anticipate this time of the year by stocking up on tried and true body suntan lotions for the beach (see the best and worst sunblocks here) and stalking the runways and red carpets for the hottest summer makeup trends (see what makeup looks are so now), sunscreens made especially for the sensitive skin on your face often get left off the summer must-haves list. Let's put a stop to that right now.
